ATL Signs Agreement with University of North Carolina, Charlotte Bioinformatics Department |
Accelerated Technology Laboratories, (ATL) Inc. and The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics have signed an agreement to evaluate ATL's new bioinformatics hardware/software platform named SeqNFind™.
The SeqNFind™ solution is a combination of a hardware and software solution that addresses the need for complete and accurate alignments of many small sequences against entire genomes utilizing a unique hardware/software cluster system that leverages a multi-processing environment to do fast and complete short read genomic sequence alignments. ATL's Director of Bioinformatics, Dr. Andrew Carr, commented, "Unlike many algorithms and implementations such as BLAST which is heuristic or other proprietary systems that use tiled sequences, SeqNFind™ is a complete genomic affine gap alignment tool, providing scientist with valuable information to facilitate discovery." The system uses a modified Smith-Waterman approach to examine short read local alignments, returning a filtered set aligned locations. SeqNFind™ utilizes a cross-platform, graphical user interface based toolset for facilitating bioinformatics research in: Next Generation Sequencing, Pipelined Microarray Analysis and Genomic comparisons.
Dr. Larry Mays commented, "University Scientists are excited to utilize the platform for reference assembly, de novo assembly, and to determine expected responses of individual genomes against assay platforms using short nucleotide primers and probes." GPU computing accelerates discovery in that they contain hundreds of cores which can easily be scaled to outperform clusters, not only saving significant time, improving accuracy, but also using much less electrical energy.
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics (BiG) has research labs engaged in bioinformatics, computational biology and genomics, as defined by the NIH. The Bioinformatics Research Center at UNCC is an interdisciplinary center involving faculty in departments including Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Statistics, and Software and Information Systems.
